PHROM PHONG
This popular address in mid Sukhumvit is all about sophistication. Even the name itself, Phrom Phong, suggests an air of grace which is apt considering over the years it has worked its position in becoming an exclusive part of the capital. Phrom Phong’s boundary can be loosely defined as from Sukhumvit Soi 31 to 43 on the odd side of the road, and 22 to 28 on the even side. However since many of these sois lead into one another, addresses on the periphery make it hard to decipher whether a particular address is in Phrom Phong or neighboring Asoke and Thonglor. Either way, this section of the BTS Green Line has become well established over the years and is very much a popular place to live. Coincidentally, properties here perform well for both the sales and the lettings markets.
Luxury Retreats.
Phrom Phong’s status can in part be attributed to Emporium shopping mall which was the first luxury shopping mall in the Bangkok opening in 1997. Home to upmarket global brands alongside a very well stocked department store selling everything you could possibly need, Emporium really set the tone and its success led to the building of its sister mall Siam Paragon at Siam BTS Station further down the Green Line. Today Emporium is part of EM District that includes EmQuartier located directly opposite Emporium on the other side of the BTS Skytrain station. Both of which enjoy direct access by foot, an element that has helped with this area’s success.
However, these are more than glitzy shopping malls as their aim to to sell at lifestyle and not just designer handbags and shoes. Shopping malls in Thailand provide everything under one roof from banks, cinemas, restaurants, children’s play areas and supermarkets selling worldwide produce. EmQuartier has been a real hit in Bangkok due to its interesting mix of shops and its striking modern design that even cleverly incorporates an indoor tropical garden filled with lush greenery and a pond. This unique mall also regularly host pop-up events and markets, and celebrates annual events such as Chinese New Year and Christmas creating a hub for the community to come together and enjoy.
Varied Choice
K Village situated on Sukhumvit Soi 26 is another popular Bangkok hangout. This community mall has a good choice in shops, restaurants and services, plus is flanked with larger supermarkets and a huge children’s soft play area. K Village’s perfect execution is down to its wealth of outside space where regular events are hosted such as farmers markets drawing in local and regional traders to showcase their goods. As well as gifts, homewares and clothes, there is a great food market with plenty of options to eat making this a place to enjoy at the weekend.
Outdoors Play.
Next to Emporium is the pretty park of Benjasiri. Situated right next to Sukhumvit Road makes access easy, and this expanse of green space is frequented by locals who want to partake in some basketball, running, tai chi, or let their children run off some steam in the children’s play area. There is even a swimming pool and skate park. With a huge lake it in the middle it is also a gathering point to commemorate Thai traditions such as Loy Krathong where at dusk pretty lit offerings are released onto the water as a way of thanks to the Water Goddess for providing water for the rice harvest.
Culinary Delights.
Travel off Sukhumvit Road and into Phrom Phong’s surrounding sois to discover the range of independent businesses such as cafes, restaurants and boutiques which give this neighborhood its edge. Many businesses have set up shop in this upmarket enclave to be a part of its opulent reputation giving residents and visitors a huge choice in how and where to spend their money.
Aside from EmQuartier’s Helix zone that has over 50 restaurants, Sukhumvit Soi 31 is lined with exciting eateries serving food from across the world and is renowned for its choice in Italian cuisine. Least of all not forgetting that Japan’s huge expatriate Bangkok population has influenced the area with Japanese eateries peppered around Phrom Phong.
Other Attractions.
Thanks to Phrom Phong’s success, this has become a sought after address amongst the expatriate community and so spas, nail bars, yoga studios, gyms, language schools and even co-working spaces have emerged to cater to demand. The knock on effect is that it draws in people and so unsurprisingly the traffic can at times can come to standstill on Sukhumvit Road proving that living as close to the BTS and adjacent shopping malls is at the top of most people’s wish lists. The location of Ananda’s ASHTON Residence 41 is the best of both worlds being positioned in a quiet soi but also just 650 meters from the BTS Station and many of the area’s other attractions.
