Bangkok Becomes a Gastronomic Heaven

The choice for its residents and visitors increases as any city develops. Businesses eye up opportunities and the population become accustomed to this new available variety. Bangkok’s has undergone rapid development and one area that has come on leaps and bounds is the choice in food.

Thailand has been long known for its love and execution of great food. Its local fare is loved around the world and the beauty of Bangkok is that you can still embrace Thai food anywhere across the city whether it be street food, at a food hall within a shopping mall or supermarket, or at a restaurant.

Over the years there has been a real shift in the quality and level of restaurant food. Historically the better restaurants were only found attached to the leading five star hotels, however this is no longer the case and new openings are occuring at such a rate that it is impossible to keep up. As a result Bangkok’s has given itself a bit of a reputation as a foodie heaven.

The tipping point was the Michelin Guide recognising Thailand’s culinary talent awarding their world famous stars to the country’s leading restaurants in 2017. Today there are 27 restaurants with this prestigious ratings, the vast majority of which are Bangkok based. Plus there is a diverse mix on the type of food on offer with Michelin starred restaurants serving food influenced from Europe, as well as Thai cuisine suggesting the shift in talents, tastes and demand within the capital. One interesting entry is Jay Fai that sells street food in a shophouse in Bangkok’s Old Town, a far cry from the notion that all fine dining needs a posh setting to match.

Aside from this globally recognised starring system, Bangkok’s accelerated number of standalones restaurants can be found throughout the city. It has become such a gastronomic destination bringing people in from across the region to sample this recently acquired status. Food has long been an integral part of Thailand, but the selection diners can now choose from is immense.

Traditional Thai houses are being converted into restaurants, shophouses are being lovely restored and other dining destinations are being situated on the top of shiny skyscrapers or within the confines of a shopping mall. One famous local chef has even opened up his home for the ultimate private dining experience. All of these are attributing to Thailand’s reputation and are a vital cog in the economy providing employment opportunities and generating tourism. Naturally this helps to strengthen demand for housing as more people want to live in Bangkok to tuck into its food credential and helps to increase the city in the attraction stakes even further.
