Curtains, Blinds or Something Else?

The window dressings that are fitted in a property serve multiple purposes. Visually they help create a look and style to complement the rest of the interior design but they also provide shade from the sun during the day and block out any surrounding light at night to promote sleep. Therefore when deciding what to go for in your property, there are a number of variable factors to consider.

Starting with their aesthetic value, curtains and blinds are a great way to finish a room and to create a focal point. Leaving a window bare looks both unfinished and not very inviting. Should the intention be for a luxurious look, then curtains are your best bet. The fabric chosen should match with other soft furnishings in the room, such as the rug, and the throws and cushions on the sofa. Curtains can be in range of fabrics from modern geometric prints or velvet drapes depending on the intended finished look.

Curtains are also a great way to block out the light hence are often chosen in the bedroom in order to create a dark and tranquil sleeping environment. However, many residents enjoy Bangkok’s outside cityscape so sometimes curtains in the living room are there to frame the window and are not necessarily drawn.

Sheers can provide a good alternative to curtains but can also be used alongside them. This thin piece of fabric provides shade from the sun, but also creates a form of privacy too hence being popular in bedrooms. Slatted venetian blinds also share the same qualities too and their flexibility is appreciated by tenants by quickly tilting them up or down.

White wooden venetian blinds create a very modern look. They work well alongside a neutral color palette that is brought to life with pops of color such as a rug or cushions, and are commonly used for those looking to achieve a Scandinavian design. Metal venetian blinds are often associated to commercial spaces like offices, so best to steer clear of these for the home.

Both curtains and blinds can have blackout qualities and are strongly recommended for the bedroom. Should you be intending to rent out your Bangkok condominium, then make it as easy on the tenant as possible as the more comfortable they are, the longer they are likely to stay in the property. You might even need to fit both curtains and blinds in one room as privacy is an important factor. Finally you do not want them to attempt to fit window dressings themselves which could create more damage in the long run.
