Bangkok’s Embassy Network.

There is a strong diplomatic presence in Bangkok. Representing countries across all continents, Thailand’s capital is often chosen as the place to headquarter the larger embassies due to the city’s infrastructure network. Hence the larger operations are based here to take advantage of this. They might even have smaller outfits in neighboring cities which in comparison are less well established with a lower standard of living across housing, education, shopping and even healthcare. In fact, many expatriates based in these neighboring countries come to Thailand’s capital to benefit from the world class healthcare that is on offer.

Sathon has been long known as the core hub for these diplomatic bases. Today countries such as Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Panama, Russia and Singapore, to name just a few, are all found here. Further up Wireless Road is the base for the Americans, British, Dutch, Hungarians, Irish, Japanese, and Vietnamese.

Other embassies are scattered along the central business district of Sukhumvit that include Argentina, Norway and the Philippines. The latter which IDEO Q Sukhumvit 36 is a mere 950 metres away from adding another string to the bow of this already popular located condominium.

Whilst each of the embassies are of varying sizes, they all bring with them a workforce that need to be housed. Since many of the expatriate staff are only posted to Bangkok for a set period of time, buying a property is not an option. Renting comes with the flexibility that they require, and in some cases the embassy covers the rent which is an attractive offer for Bangkok’s investment landlords. However, local staff also require accommodation and being as close to the embassy as possible or via the means of the mass transit network is a real plus.

It is estimated that there are hundreds if not thousands, based at the Bangkok American Embassy who use Bangkok as a base for missions across Southeast Asia. Focusing on a variety of fields that include development and security, the embassies also provide consular assistance for its own residents as well as visa services for those wishing to visit the country.
