Sukhumvit
Any person unfamiliar with Bangkok will want to get their bearings around the city. Since the capital covers such a vast area with no clearly defined center, it can be hard to know where to start. The mass transit network provides a good guide and ask a handful of residents where to start exploring and Sukhumvit is likely to be their answer. There are many reasons why there is so much hype for this neighborhood. Fashionable enclaves provide places to shop, dine and drink. Businesses thrive on its central location dubbed as one of Bangkok’s CBDs where services are in abundance. Sukhumvit is the place to live, work and play and predictably any parcel of land ripe for development is snapped up.
Connectivity
Sukhumvit Road starts in the west directly beneath Phloen Chit BTS Station and travels in a south easterly direction travelling beyond the current end of the Sukhumvit Line or Green Line of Kheha Station in Samut Prakan. The popularity of the BTS that travels directly over Sukhumvit Road and its traffic can be attributed to Sukhumvit’s status as being a sought after location to live. This locale is home to vast numbers of expatriates who thrive on its convenience since many workplaces are based here, not to mention a plethora of international schools and hospitals. Ananda have condominiums dotted throughout the area close by to the Green Line of the BTS, ideal for those wishing to capitalise on this area’s success.
Understanding Sukhumvit
Since the label of ‘Sukhumvit’ covers such a vast geographic region, many break each part down into lower, mid and upper since each has a slightly different character. All the even and odd sois either side of Sukhumvit Road are captured into these areas as regardless of where you are within the Sukhumvit boundaries, many of the independent businesses are based down the sois rather than on the main thoroughfare which is home to the larger shopping malls. These impressive retail centers flank the stations making direct access into them a breeze.
Lower, Upper and Mid Sukhumvit
Lower Sukhumvit starts at the most westerly point including the BTS Stations of Nana, Asoke which is the only interconnecting station onto the MRT at Sukhumvit Station, and reaches the border of Phrom Phong. Asoke is home to T21 shopping mall that is aimed at the younger demographic and which mimics an airport with different countries on each floor. Phrom Phong oozes sophistication and is home to the infamous EM District consisting of Emporium on the southern side and EmQuartier on the opposite of the station. These malls are teeming with retail offerings, supermarkets, restaurants, pop ups, and other activities. Their success has marked EM District as its own destination which ASHTON Residence 41 enjoys being walking distance from.
Travelling towards the next stop into mid Sukhumvit is Thong Lo and then Ekkamai. Thong Lo continually gets accredited for its leading nightlife. Exit Thong Lo BTS Station and head up Sukhumvit Soi 55 and you will be greeted with an endless choice of places to eat and drink with regular openings being concentrated in this area. Due to the desirability of this area, there has been an overspill into neighboring Ekkamai that is known for its Japanese influences with a string of restaurants geared towards demand.
Lastly upper Sukhumvit can loosely be defined as the subsequent BTS stations that incorporate Phra Khanong, On Nut and Bangchak and beyond. There is considerable excitement around this end of the Green Line since development is dense in lower and mid Sukhumvit resulting in condominiums and businesses spilling into this area. People have followed accordingly drawn in by the affordability and the local Thai culture which is still so apparent here, combined with effortless commutes to the rest of the city due to the efficiency of the BTS Skytrain.
The Future
Just like any fashionable part of town, Sukhumvit will remain in the spotlight but the shift in focus from the core areas to further down the Green Line will strengthen the appeal further to this end. This is reinforced by the lack of space to develop in lower and mid Sukhumvit which pushes new residences deep into the sois. Whilst these condominiums can claim a Sukhumvit address, their peril is the distance to the closest mass transit network to the disadvantage of those living there. On the contrary ASHTON Asoke has an prime position off Sukhumvit Road being just 20 meters to MRT Sukhumvit and 230 meters from BTS Asoke demonstrating the success Ananda have in cherry picking the best destinations across the capital.
As this public transportation network continues on its mass expansion throughout Bangkok, the need to be in its immediate vicinity will become even more amplified. Access to both airports will be via this means, making the distance to the BTS and MRT vital. This is exactly why living right next to Sukhumvit’s stations is a must and for investors it gives reassurance that their Bangkok condominium will be in demand, ideal for both rental yields and capital appreciation.
